5 Cosy UK Staycations

Stylish and cosy hotels, cabins and places to stay this autumn and winter.

As we cross the threshold into cosy season and the memory of the sun warming our skin becomes ever more distant, it’s nice to have something to look forward to. Enter, the cute staycation.

The joy of our favourite time of day (ahem, late afternoon), is that it’s just as enjoyable spent curled up by the fire after a windy walk as it is spent on a beach. Luckily the UK is brimming with great spots for cosy staycations, and not all of them require draining the bank account to afford.

With that in mind, we’ve pulled together our top five staycation spots, with lots of options allowing for single night stays.

Stylish stays with autumn vibes...

'The Room' At Caro, Bruton

This hidden gem right in the centre of Bruton is the perfect way to enjoy the village and its many delights. Run by Natalie Jones, founder of Caro and arbiter of great taste, The Room is a beautiful 2 story B&B space with a ground floor kitchenette which offers the ultimate flexibility for guests. From £180 a night, the room includes breakfast at its neighbouring (and just as chic) restaurant ‘At the Chapel’.

Swallowtail Hill, East Sussex

Swallowtail Hill is 50 acres of private nature reserve with lodges on the edge of wild meadows and huts hidden in magical woodland. One of the first sites offering ‘off-grid’ style stays, it really is the perfect place to switch off (and all options have wood-fired heaters for that wintery cosiness). Amenities range from wood-fired hot tubs to outdoor fire pits equipped with cooking gear, and several are without any electricity for those extra keen to test their resolve. Having stayed here in summer we vowed to come back to enjoy a wintery break too.

Updown Farmhouse

Updown Farmhouse is a 17th century former farmstead just outside Deal, Kent. Comprising a main house and several cottages dotted around 7 acres of grounds, the abundant gardens and woodland mean a walk is obligatory before cosying up inside. Inside you’ll find a hotel made for cosy sessions - with a library, games and an honesty bar. Their restaurant focuses on locally sourced ingredients and they do a fantastic sounding room, dinner and breakfast deal over winter. Rooms start at £190 per night and this is top of our list to try.

Firesyde

For those who like the idea of staying in a cabin, but can’t quite do without their creature comforts, Firesyde might just be for you… i.e. yes, there is a coffee machine. Only an hour from London, it’s perfect for a weekend getaway without the faff. The 300-acre site is kitted out with everything you need for a cosy getaway; plenty of walking, a sauna and cold plunge, outdoor baths and they even offer curated hampers designed for campfire dining. This is also a great option for a group getaway with several lodges located together. From £255 a night.

The Alfriston

With a spa being non-negotiable for many staycationers, the newly opened Alfriston is bound to be popular. With rooms from £150 this is one to book now before everyone else does. Nestled in the storybook village of Alfriston (think vintage tea rooms, vintage clothes and book shops) surrounded by the South Downs and only 15 mins drive to the sea. If you’re not spending all your time at the Spa you can grab a pair of boots from the ‘Wellie Wall’ and explore one of the many local walking trails. It’s also both children and dog friendly if you need it.
