How to style: The Christmas Table

Unusual ideas to set your table apart…

This year, we wanted to come up with a Christmas table idea that was celebratory yet refreshing. A palette cleanser, if you will.

We learned a few things along the way, having fun trying out ideas, and our new-found wisdom is below. It’s fun to play around with looks and lean into something you haven’t tried before.

We hope this inspires you to have some fun and try out some new colours and ideas if you’re hosting any festive gatherings.

Create a Christmas table with a difference...

Colour block tablecloth in an unexpected colour

The quickest way to make a difference to the look of a table is by using a bold colour block cloth. We used this amazing bit of fabric we had (shhh, it’s not even a tablecloth!) to create a chartreuse and burgundy-infused Christmas table with a zesty edge. Pick a colour you wouldn’t usually try that contrasts with your favourite plates. Have fun with something new.

A fruity centrepiece

A trailing fruit centerpiece is giving us medieval banquet, in a good way. Create a bacchanalian feel with trailing grapes and figs, which have gorgeous rich colours and elegant trails. We used our Basketweave Bowl in Green to act as a focal point and draped from there.

Perfectly imperfect candles

Create an asymmetrical arrangement of candles of varying heights to add interest. We sourced a variety of vintage candleholders in pewter and silver from ebay and chopped the bottom of long tapered white candles to ensure none was the same height.

Decorate with plates

Treat your crockery and cutlery like baubles on a Christmas tree. The light catches the cutlery and adds a subtle shimmer in the candlelight, whilst decorative plates act as bursts of pattern and colour.
